Förändringar i våra dagliga rutinaktiviteter och säkerhet: Vad kan vi lära oss?
I denna veckas podcast har vi 3 unga forskare som berättar om sina erfarenheter kring pandemin från 3 olika kontinenter: Afrika, Asien och Sydamerika.
Många hävdar att karantän kommer att leda till en kraftig ökning av våld i hemmet men i länder som Sydafrika och Brasilien har karantän andra dimensioner: fattiga utan jobb som inte klara sig utan mat; trångboddheten gör det omöjligt att tillämpa karantän och de som drabbas mest är kvinnor som utgör majoriteten av ’essential workers’ inom sjukvården. I Brasilien använder man situationen kring covid-19 som ett vapen i diskussioner kring politisk instabilitet.
Alla är överens om att vi kan lära oss från dessa tider. Medan Karina och Miao frågar sig hur vi bättre kan planera städer i framtiden tänker Marcelo på lösningar för kunna erbjuda sjukvård till alla.

South Africa has been quick in reacting to the pandemic. Karina Landman tells us that the extreme lockdown has made homicide dropped drastically, but what is the price? “Is it sustainable in the long run?” She wonders. Informal traders do not have jobs. Malnutrition among poor children is going up. The case of South Africa well exemplifies the challenges with coronavirus in the Global South. Karina is an Associate Professor at Pretoria University, an expert on gated communities, sustainable neighborhoods and housing, urban resilience, and public space.

What does lockdown look like in China? Miao Xu talks about her personal experience from Beijing, what is left of the outdoor activities in semi-secluded spaces, formal surveillance, and lessons that we can take with us from this time. “How can we plan better cities? …Do we really need many shopping centers?” wonders Miao who is an architect, with the education of both China and Germany. She worries about how divided we have become and calls for the union. “I see the world as a big family”, she says. In her Ph.D. thesis at KTH, she explores how to plan and build eco-cities in China.

To advocate the end of the quarantine, President Bolsonaro says that the pandemic can generate violence. Is this risk real? What is the impact of the pandemic on crime rates in Brazil? What are the challenges of post-pandemic Brazil? Marcelo Ryngelblum, a master candidate in Public Health at the University of Sao Paulo expresses his experiences under the new routine with the pandemic and worries about everyday struggles in a country facing major socio-economic and political challenges.
